Friendly Fire: Wardogs Mixed Reviews - The Elephant in the Staging Area

NANOZKE · 29/10/2026 · 2 reads · 3 min read
TL;DR — Key Intel
  • Negative reviews kill Steam visibility and directly threaten the studio's survival.
  • Backlash over rushed seasons ignores that WARDOGS is a small indie team, not AAA.
  • Premium gunplay causes unfair expectations for a squad punching above its weight.
Friendly Fire: Wardogs Mixed Reviews - The Elephant in the Staging Area

Let’s talk about the elephant in the staging area.

The game is currently taking heavy fire in the review section, sitting at a "Mixed" rating with only 55% of recent reviews skewing positive. Steam review bombing has become a standard tactic in PC gaming lately - just look at the constant anti-cheat back-and-forth over in Helldivers 2 - but the current bombardment hitting WARDOGS feels a little unfair.

Here is the sitrep on why the recent negative reviews are hurting the game, and why our AU/NZ community might want to hold the line.

The Steam Algorithm Warzone

When a game gets review bombed, it isn't just a blow to developer morale; it has immediate consequences for the game's survival.

"Steam’s algorithm doesn’t push you if your recent reviews slip to mixed," executive producer Joe Brammer explained in a recent PCGamesN interview. "If you go to mostly negative, you’re just like: bang, no advertising. So we didn’t sell many new copies of the game this weekend."

Unlike massive publishers who can weather the storm with massive marketing budgets, the team behind WARDOGS has to answer directly to the people keeping the lights on.

"If we go to mostly negative, we’ve got to go to our board and answer questions," Brammer continued. "We’ve got business and investment issues, it’s a business at the end of the day, and we have to react to certain things."

Indie Squad, AAA Expectations

So, why the sudden influx of red thumbs down? The community backlash largely stems from a rushed Season Two launch and concerns that Season Three is being pushed out the door even faster. Players are hungry for perfectly polished content, but they are forgetting one crucial detail: WARDOGS is an indie game.

Because the gunplay and large-scale combat feel so premium, expectations have skyrocketed. Creative director Tim Nightingale hit the nail on the head: "The success we suffer from now is that people now assume immediately that we’re much bigger than we are."

This is a smaller squad punching way above their weight class, and the community expects them to deploy updates with the speed and flawlessness of a massive AAA studio.

Holding the Line in Live Service

Running a live-service shooter is a completely different battlefield, and the developers are openly admitting they are still adjusting their sights. Brammer acknowledged that in recent weeks, the team has reacted "too much" to community pressure instead of sticking to their concrete plans.

However, the team isn't asleep at the wheel. They are actively trying to dial in the balance.

"We are testing every single day; there isn’t a point where we’re not testing and we’re not looking at these things," Nightingale explained. "Live service is new for us in terms of the things we’ve got to really keep a beat on, understand where players are going to push back on things, changes that we make – what they’re going to like, what they’re not going to like."

Stand Down and Reassess

Brammer has made it clear that "reviews matter to us." While the devs aren't demanding players change their feedback today, they are hoping that the community will "consider updating" their scores once the new content drops and the dust settles.

At OCE DOGS, our take is simple: constructive feedback is essential, but gutting a game's visibility on [Steam](https://store.steampowered.com/app/1867240/WARDOGS/) because a season feels rushed only hurts the player base in the long run. WARDOGS launched into Early Access as an absolute killer of a shooter. It might take a minute for the dev team to get their live-service logistics sorted, but considering the high quality of the base game, it is absolutely worth the wait.

Keep your feedback sharp, keep it fair, and we'll see you in the trenches.
